Dr Andus,
My view of what "nimble" means is that you can quickly bang out an outline -- that means that the application becomes as transparent as possible as you write. Agreed that this is a very sub...

Another option, if you're looking for a clean, simple interface is ActionOutline:

It's an older app that lacks some common info management features such as tags, but it...
I agree with Dr Andus that Scrivener would do the trick.
If that seems a little too much to deal with, you could also try Sense. I have not tried it, but if you search on this site, you'll find some ...
Doc,
Have you tried Treepad Lite? It's one of the grand-daddy two-pane apps and is pretty nimble:

I wouldn't try the paid versions, as they add fluff that it...

Coincidentally, Tom Davis just sent a note to the Zoot forum in response to a question about documentation addressing the issue:

Cassius,
I do use Zoot XT, not extensively as yet, but I have a lot of legacy data in the app, since it was my go to info manager for many years. It runs just fine on Windows 7, but I can't comment a...
Another Noteliner Update
1/22/2013
As far as I'm concerned, Sam, there's no need for a plug. Noteliner is one of the best outliners available for Windows. You should be charging for it. Thank you for your generousity and the brilliant ...
You can do this with TheBrain. And in OneNote you can not only make links to specific pages of notes, but to individual paragraphs in those notes.
I think you can also do this in Zoot, but am unsure....

Zoot can do this as well, although I confess I haven't tried it in the Zoot XT, so don't know how well it does it. Also, I recall the InfoSelect did this very well, too.

Certainly sub-items can be a substitute for inline notes, but here are a few reasons I find inline notes more appropriate (some of these depend upon how the outliner in questions works):

Great topic, Doc!
This will probably not surprise anyone who has read my ravings, but just give me modern GrandView and I'll be happy as can be. If I'm getting greedy, I'd add:

I can only echo Alexander's sentiments and say welcome. This group is like an oasis for me.

Bill,
Thanks for the rant, because you made me take another look at ProjectBook, which is a much more comprehensive info manager than I had originally understood it to be.
