Writer's log

I do not. Though I write quite a bit, most of it is for clients and is on case. Amount written is not a meaningful metric for me.
However, I know Ulysses has interesting widgets for tracking writi...
TheBrain 9 is out of beta
7/15/2018
I also miss this -- and the ability in v8 to index a folder from the file system and have TheBrain create a thought for each of the documents in that folder.
I spoof the note-in-a-window feature by ...
As with anything to do with "metadata" -- it depends. Including the definition of "metadata". The way Windows or macOS handles tags varies, and the way third party software on those platforms reco...
Finder searches are far more adaptable and configurable than any DEVONthink search

I agree. Absolutely. DEVONthink is good but not essential.

What is "ugly" software?
7/12/2018
I'm somewhat on a different plane with regard to DEVONthink -- the UI is utilitarian but since I use have the app open and actively use it 8 - 10 hrs / day, I find the majority of those visible contro...
What is "ugly" software?
7/11/2018
I see comments here and there in this forum and -- sometimes mild, sometimes very stern -- in the vein "this software is so ugly I cannot / refuse / have a hard time using it".
I'm a sucker for nice ...

That's great news, Chris. And thank you for providing the forum, maintaining, and moderating it. It's a great asset for the community you've created,
The only suggestion is let me edit my stuff. ...
MacJournal

If there's fear of anyone tracking anything, then Little Snitch or similar is a good idea. Using Snitch, I've never noticed anything untoward about MJ.
I've used MacJournal steadily for over a deca...

I use OO5 because I need the custom columns, and for things that need to be exported with styling (as mentioned by Steve -- very nice example he posted, by the way). Of course Word or Pages can do t...
Sorry, long topic title. I was thinking about which of my "favorite" outliner apps I would give up if something better came along. Unfortunately "favorite" doesn't necessarily mean good or great, ...

BTW, WiFi sync does not always work on mesh networks. I find it is more reliable to create a network on my laptop, connect the iPad to that network, and then sync MJ on both machines.

Welcome to MacJournal, Bill. I agree with everything you wrote. Though I am still concerned that there seems to have been silence from Dan since 2 years ago. (Maybe he started a new blog some pl...
I'm not a fan of the "bucket app" idea. We all have a terrific "bucket app" by default -- the file system. I'd suggest the problem should be approached from the needs perspective -- what are your ...
Yes. Definitely wasn't a good idea to post a recommendation for something I like and use without first consulting those who know better. Now I know! Many thanks for setting me straight.
@satis is complete right, as usual. Drafts rules, of course.
Chris -- if you are following along, please delete this thread so more folks aren't mislead about Edit.
Then don't use it? Really, it's about simple. Sometimes that's appealing.

Dynalist gets an API
7/3/2018
It's a very minimalist API. Get a document. Post changes to a document. Send data to the Dynalist Inbox. Someone writing a native app would have to do all of the 98% of the rest of work involve...
Sure, all versions since v1.
But the point of Edit is it does only one thing. Which is all I need most of the time.

Peter, I definitely agree with Bill. And I like the Pro/Standard concept. From looking at screenshots and not the real deal, I definitely think you've designed a thoughtful, quite utile service.

That's on the high end of task apps -- Omnifocus Pro territory. Without an web or an iOS companion app, without sync, and especially without an iPhone presence I think it's a push.
Are you going...
