I'll give Boxcryptor a try. It allows me to encrypt files and folders selectively - not all files need to be secured.
I'll keep you informed.

Strange. Doesn't work in the German edition. At least I found a way to add a free-form node (but no keyboard shortcut). But I'll uninstall Freeplane as I find it more cumbersome to use than Xmind 2013...
