I was exclusively Linux for quite a while - about 10 years. Then I took a job with a Microsoft shop place, and it just got to be too much work to maintain multiple platforms and updates, so I moved ov...
Satis, that just opened a whole *box* of CRIMPING. So let me make sure I understand this. qownnotes DOES allow the rearranging of notes in the hierarchy pane? And it runs on Windows, Mac, Android, and...
Yeah, that's my story, too. I first used Tuxcards, much preferred KnowIt, and was thrilled when I contacted the author to add word count, and he sent me the revised program the next day. But you're ri...
Correction. I remembered wrong. The gjots and kjots do allow hierachy and rearrangement.
But Write doesn't satisfy the request, does it? If offers a navigational guide, but you can't collapse the sections on the left hand pane,or change their order. The only plain text app I know of that ...
best outliner you use? (2018)

I think there is a distinction between what this group does (CRIMP and CRIMP again) and what makes a sustainable model for a software developer. I think of something like SmartDown or Outlinely. I bou...
Not all are really outliners (Vym is a mindmapper, the jots programs aren't hierarchical, tomboy and others are wikis, etc.) but there are some great ones here. I forgot about Basket. KnowIt is an imp...

I believe times (a fork of hnb) is Linux only. It's a console app, old school, but surprisingly powerful. It kind of reminds me of PC-Outline, the DOS version. Hours of fun!

Yes, Gingko was and is cool. I was very taken with several things:
- markdown
- cards - a nice metaphor for dragging things around. Visually discrete.
- many outlining functions
I suspect the proble...

All things are mortal. Even software.
I really liked the first version of Smartdown, which I bought. I had high hopes for the second, which I also bought. But I find that I don't use either. I do be...

I happened to run across this searching for Calmly Writer in the archives. Classeur, which does look pretty good, is shutting down on May 31, 2018.
Moo.do and Dynalist integrate with Google calendar.
TaskPaper iOS apps

I did use Taskmator when it first came out. Eventually I moved over to Editorial, whixh has a good implementation of Taskpaper, and the added benefit of text editing.

Yes, the short video is intriguing. I was out and about in the city yesterday, hopping on buses and trains, so my comments were brief. Part of the fun of this forum is spotting interesting new apps, t...

best outliner you use? (2018)

Excellent piece, Steve, thanks for posting. "Banging out an outline" in ways that are obvious is a big piece of what I need, too. What I like about Dynalist (and Outlinely) as opposed to Checkvist (as...
"Note taking with mind maps"

Sure. I use outlines for almost everything. But I find that mind are more easily grouped by color and more efficient in fitting on a single page (although that's why that multi-column outliner is cool...

As noted elsewhere, I think the two "best" I use are Notecase Pro - a two pane outliner that really does everything and more that I need it to - except let me work with it on a Chromebook or iPad (the...
I know we have other Notecase users here. It does a great job with images. A very flexible two pane outliner with scripts, in active development, and available in Windows, Linux, and the Mac. Also on ...
FoldingText for Atom text editor
4/7/2018
I used it for a couple of nights, and the folding text and taskpaper modes worked pretty well. But maybe one of the first commenters here got it right, it does seem kind of sluggish, and I've had it c...
"Note taking with mind maps"

For me, Mindmaps are the perfect tools for planning and giving talks. I can put on a single page enough content (key words) for a keynote or day long workshop. Unlike a more linear outline, I can move...

I'm downloading for Windows. Looks like 3 has folding!

I tried a word counter chrome extension, but it didn't work beyond a single node. Maybe I'll spend some time meeting with this.
