For free local management, you might try Zotero. For free local + cloud management, you might try Zotero or Mendeley.

For a free non-GUI approach related to LaTeX, you might try BibDesk.

Anything else costs something. I am going to Bookends from Papers3 for my local storage. I keep Mendeley to share with my group.

Past the freeware options, I don’t think anything better than these two (Papers3 or Bookends) exist. The other options are either more expensive or less aesthetically pleasing.

I still use Zotero, which I’ve been using for well over a decade, although the lack of a good mobile solution is a major downside.

Although it looks a bit too simplistic for my purposes, I see that a new Mac reference app just appeared called SnowyOwl.

Correction: SnowyOwl is cross-platform

SnowyOwl looks like a very pleasant piece of software, at a very modest price.

It appears to have quite a lot of the features of much more sophisticated reference managers - as long as you can live without a built-in PDF/file viewer.

I like it! Although it would be nice to have an iOS version.

The latest version of Highland 2, incidentally, supports endnotes and reference notes, although it doesn’t apply automated citation styles, so it’s not a reference manager as such. But it’s a nice touch for a writing tool.
