How to OFF-line Set-up Joomla

And these are JUST the best selected EXTENTIONS,
not even mentioning the native-integrated ability
to via IFrame html embed ANY Web-site Address,
into ANY article, and thus be able to on top of this all
launch ANY online app you can think of!

and if you add into this all
a multiple windows browser (MDI)
or a good windows splitting program
in which you can also SAVE workspaces
(and best short-cut them like CRTL+1 / CTRL+2 etc.)
you’ll have a level of flexibility & extend-ability
that truly no other cms/sotware/platform can come close to,
since Joomla has the most extentions of all.

But again, just something to ponder,
no need to change your entire way
at once, but sure a worth considering.

Greetings!

Interesting. I had never thought of using a content management system as my operating environment. On the one hand, that would seem to make for an all-in-one solution. That is indeed an impressive list of extensions, and I’ve always liked the Open Source approach. The ability to run it on one’s own server could make it a kind of private network, accessible from elsewhere.

There seem to be many guides about how to set it up, too. I just glanced at one for Ubuntu 12.04, which is what I use.

On the other hand, it feels a little like deciding to use emacs - a decision with maybe a high learning curve, and requiring more commitment to a platform than I might be able to muster.

Has anyone else gone the route of using their own server, their own content management system, to make the one ring to bind them all?

I would say “render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s…”. I find CMSs non-conducive to focused development of texts and sheets, let alone graphic-rich sophisticated content. The fragmentation between editing (back office) and viewing (website) content interfaces is alone a major time waster in my experience. I don’t think I’ve met anyone who writes long texts directly in a CMS; they all first develop it in Word and then copy/paste it for publication.

Funnily enough, I have experimented with CMSes as outliners over a number of years. Each time, I’ve eventually come away feeling slightly frustrated, but each time, the concept has seemed more feasible - because modern computers are faster, CMS software is much more efficient (not least thanks to development for mobile), and because interfaces are improving.

For a while I ran Kerio Workspace as my main outliner, on an HP ProBook. That actually worked fairly well, not least because Kerio Workspace also backs itself up automatically. For me, the main issue in using CMSes as outliners is the ‘search’ function - only a very few CMSes have a really competent search function. And only a few allow you to output pages as e.g. PDF files using a simple ‘Print’ option.

But the concept is a good one, Don. In fact, the recent launch of ImpressPages 4.0 had me musing on whether to experiment with that on my current laptop (Lenovo Z370). The latest version of ImpressPages has a very nice dynamic editor that allows you to work straight into layout - it’s nicely designed and very easy to use. Not dissimilar, in fact, to the very good job Apple have done in transferring their iWork suite to the Cloud (their online apps, accessible through a web browser, are truly awesome). But ImpressPages doesn’t have anything like the wealth of extensions, themes, plugins etc. as Joomla or WordPress.

However, it’s worth bearing in mind that you can get a dynamic front-end editor for WordPress (can’t remember the name offhand, but if I do I’ll post it up here).

I think that there’s a very broad field stretching from the likes of Joomla and WordPress to something like Kerio Workspace (now Samepage.io). The latter is more typical of team collaboration tools, intranets and Sharepoint or similar frameworks. I wouldn’t call it a CMS, if we agree that a CMS is first and foremost a publishing platform.

That said, it appears that some people do use Joomla in particular instead of Sharepoint http://www.ragan.com/Main/Articles/The_top_20_alternatives_to_SharePoint_45308.aspx It’s actually a very ‘long tail’ like distribution.
