Exporting information from one PIM into another PIM

Sometimes this is relatively easy (e.g. GrandView into Inspiration); usually it is not.

I think that it might be worthwhile for those who have had success in accomplishing this, to tell the rest of us how they did it, particularly if they found an efficient procedure.  As an example, I reproduce below the procedure I use for moving outlines from GrandView into Inspiration.

Based on several glowing accounts of UltraRecall (eg,. Pavi, Wolfgang), I used the Bits du Jour offer for UltraRecall Pro. I have much to learn, but in the few minutes I’ve tried to move info from Jot+ into other PIMs, UR seems to work by far the best.

============
10/30/11:

The best approach (so far) that I’ve found for converting GV files to Inspiration is:

In the GV file, switch to “Outline View” and turn both “Columns” and “Category Display” OFF.
Expand EVERYTHING, then highlight EVERYTHING.
Choose the labeling style “Outline/Labels/Get Style/Indentation w/no labels.”
Export the file to “PA -Paragraph” format.  (File/Export/Paragraph)
Pick a file name and add the extension “.rtf”  Note which folder the file is in.
Open the exported file in Inspiration.  Inspiration will automatically convert the “.rtf” file to an Inspiration file.

To keep the GV file the way it was before you made these changes, do not close the file using the GrandView “Quit.”  Instead, with the GrandView window displayed, close it in Windows using one of the following:
Press the combination ALT-SPACEBAR, then choose CLOSE (works in XP, may work in others)
OR
Open the Windows Task Manager, choose GrandView and choose “End Task.”

FOR SAFETY, do not delete your GrandView file.  The conversion might have errors or might not have copied everything.

The one possible difficulty may be the limited size of each Inspiration note.  I don’t know what might happen if the conversion process encounters one that is too long.

Hello all,
Also based on the positive reviews for UltraRecall, I just installed UltraRecall Pro. Does anyone have any advice for transferring MyLifeOrganized items to UR?
Also, does UR offer a separate to-do view that displays certain items that can be filtered, sorted, etc, similar to MLO’s To-Do tab?
Thanks!

I, too, just purchased UR and know nothing about it, BUT the following MAY work if MLO is a 2-pane PIM with a tree on the left.  It seems to work for Jot+  :

1. Fully expand your MLO tree.
2. Drag each individual first-level MLO tree node onto, say, the “Imported Items” node in the UR tree.
3.  Did it work?
4. If so,  drag each second level MSO tree node onto the corresponding first level node in UR.
5.  Etc., etc.

As I said, it seems to work for Jot+.

AMAZING!!!

I just tried the above procedure for moving Jot+ tree nodes into RightNote.  It doesn’t work for RightNote.

I then tried the procedure for moving Jot+ notes into TreePad Business.  It works!!!—except, one loses the name of the node and has to enter it manually.

I’ll be trying more, after lunch.

I have tried the above procedure with other PIMs in my collection (not all of which I use and should uninstall).  Again, the trial procedure is dragging a tree node from Jot+ onto a tree node in another PIM or into a blank (single pane) outline item.  Here are the preliminary results so far:

INTO:

Ultra Recall -works
myBase - doesn’t work
RightNote - doesn’t work
KeyNote NF - doesn’t work
TreePad Business - works, but you have to manually add the node name
Aml Pages - doesn’t work
AllMyNotes - doesn’t work
Inspiration - works (a tree node becomes an outline item)
Noteliner - doesn’t work

THIS TESTING ONLY TAKES 5-10 MINUTES.  WHY NOT TRY IT WITH SOME OF YOUR PIMS AND REPORT THE RESULTS!
