Notebooks for iPad version 6 is free right now. According to appshopper it’s never been free before.
IMPORTANT - as it says “Notebooks 6 is no longer maintained and has been replaced by Notebooks 7” This is version 6.1.4, last updated Dec. 13, 2013
Notebooks 7 for ipad is $11 (it has varied between $10 and $13) and is also available on Mac ($20), iphone ($5), and Windows ($22).
I’m taking this opportunity to get it and play around with it. I used the Windows trial some and I can see why others here are fans.

There is also Notebooks Lite for iPad—which is a free, limited version of Notebooks 7 for iPad. It limits the number of notebooks and number of notes and is intended for trialing the software.

The Windows version is slow and buggy - it crashed at the moment I’ve tried to paste the first webpage. Pdf notes are created, but can’t be opened. Images can’t be resized. You can’t drag and drop the file into the note to create a link.
At this stage, it’s far from being of any use
