Technically it is often called “Hoisting”. Whizfolders for example calls it that. Others like Tinderbox Scrivener Getright HyperPlan and some others also allow similar propriety or custom views. They let one create such selective custom views of chosen items/sub-items in new views or outlines or whatever terminology they use. Usually by tags or metadata or other means. Some let you sort by tags metadata by clicking column titles, like scrivener. Can color label too, etc etc. However I prefer multi views of same doc in Outline4D to hoisting. Not many use Outline4D, maybe a few here. I can import into Outline4D output from dozens of softwares of various genres, wasn’t easy, needs a specific number of different steps for each though.
