Whoops! I’m afraid my attempt to take my off-thread comment on Citation out of the original thread didn’t work as I intended…

Yes, it’s called xpdf. Redwood’s Wilbur (indexed search software) uses it to convert and index pdf files on the fly. TotalComander also has a plugin which converts pdf to text for viewing. Until Wilbur started using xpdf I recall having to convert all my pdf files (except image ones, for which it does not work) before I could index and search them.
