For my son, there is an element of fun. You can make quite funky designs without realising that you’re actually “doing homework” and learning as you go.

I assume there is also some theory behind it as well, in the sense that some people can think better in pictures rather than verbally (especially at an age when linguistic skills are still being developed).

However, I’m not a psychologist so I won’t take it any further than that.
