Does anyone here find “mind mapping” conceptually clarifying for oneself (as contrasted with using it as an expository aid)?

What’s the tie-in exactly to the education market? We never made mind maps when I was a kid. <g> Do the diagrams serve perhaps more a motivational than conceptual function, particularly among children?
