Zotero has recently integrated a powerful note editor into a new PDF reader. It is available in the beta version.

It looks very interesting.

I have a knack for being too late to the party. Docear was extremely innovative and I was late to discover it.  I was also late to Qiqqa but it seems it has been open sourced and undergoing a resurgence.

“The note editor is built on ProseMirror, a powerful open-source framework for building rich-text editors (used in Zotero’s sibling project, Tropy) that enables us to enhance notes with all sorts of Zotero-specific functionality. You can quickly jump back from annotations and citations in a note to the original location in the PDF or to the item in your library. You can edit a citation in a note using the same citation dialog used for the word processor plugins. If you accidentally delete or move the citation for an annotation, you can right-click on the annotation and instantly recreate the citation, helping you ensure your quotes are always properly attributed”

I’m looking forward to using it once it comes out of beta. I use Zotero daily and wouldn’t want to destabilise my current system. Any idea of a release date?

Sorry, I missed your comment. According to Zotero’s support documentation (https://www.zotero.org/support/pdf_reader_preview):

“These features will all be part of Zotero 6 later this year (2021), but we’re making them available as a preview today in the Zotero Beta.”

The current version is 5, so of today it is still in beta. But there are only a few months till the end of 2021, so not too long to wait now.
