Looks like it is for sale today.  Not sure if I need another note taker to try but I am considering trying it.

Do others have strong feelings about it’s merits and/or limitations?

Ultra Recall is on sale again at Bits du Jour.

I just bought it myself and I’m very happy with how powerful it is. The web clipping in Firefox works fine. The contacts sync with Outlook is really impressive. And the search query builder allows you to build very complex searches without having to write any syntax.

Buying from BitsDuJour makes me a little nervous because much of the software sold there is old, or janky, or the companies are selling apps that aren’t well-maintained.

For example, in the Mac section one of the top listed apps is something called ThoughtOffice, for $96.77. When I saw screenshots memories flooded in and I immediately recognized it as being a renamed version of IdeaFisher—an app I’d bought in the late 80s that came on a couple of dozen 800K floppies. I did some searching and discovered that it was indeed the same app, and it had gotten sold off and renamed a dozen years ago.

But not only hasn’t the app been updated since 2007, the website for the developer is defunct.

By comparison Ultra Recall is certainly not in that bad a shape, and small updates have continued to drip out, but the current v.6 was originally released four years ago.

I’m still using UltraRecall as my daily organise-everything workhorse, despite trying all kinds of newer and shinier things. It doesn’t have its own way of doing things you have to squeeze into - but I also don’t find myself spending hours trying to organise / beautify / understand my organiser. Long may it live.
