For anyone who needs the free TreePad Viewer, you can still download it from here:

If you have Treepad (hjt) files, you can still open them with Keynote outliner which is Free and open-source.

Can also import txt, rtf, Treepad, html and export as those formats too.

Download for Windows:

or:

There are actually a whole lot of apps which can convert hjt files, since TreePad was the great-granddaddy of two-pane outliners. The problem -- at least my (consistent) problem -- is that TreePad's native format is .tpd and converting to hjt -- from within TreePad or with a 3rd-party app -- completely screws up complex formatting while also struggling with very large files.

That's why TreePad's viewer is a thing (or was, when FreeByte was still alive.)

I don't think "many" apps export hjt (Treepad) files. In fact that's the big problem with outliner software and their devs. They import as many filetype formats as they can, and export few, apparently to keep users from going elsewhere. Which in fact, has the opposite effect.

The few exceptions in whatever genre of software, not just outliners, are richly rewarded by a growing user base, for their noble spirit as it permeates all their work. As many users have toolchains paths in various software in their processes.

So if anyone knows any other software that exports in Treepad's hjt format, please post here as I could use more than just Keynote. The more the better as each had limitations on import types.

Thanks in advance.

MyInfo does a good job of it. I actually use the export in hjt to export it into a few different programs each week.

KeyNote NF is the only other one I use that exports to hjt from what I can tell.

NoteCase Pro is really nice, you may ask the guys on the forum if it would be easy to write a script to export it in that format. I know it imports hjt great now that the developer fixed a few bugs.

Thanks LB. That would be nice. Currently the way I found is exporting NC as OPML.

Then importing into Halna (Android app) as OPML-2, a format I asked him to create last year for this purpose.

Exporting as hjt on Halna.

Import Into Treepaf, save again as hjt on Treepad.

IIRC hjt exports by Halna on Android or Keynote on Windows sometimes have problems exporting all the inline data (data inside the nodes, on the right panel). Hence needing a final hjt save on Treepad. Apparently not all hjt are the same.

Thanks for the MyInfo tip, will try this weekend.

In addition to Halna, Android Outliner also both imports and exports in .hjt format.

I tried Android Outliner (Pro) last year with a couple of big hjt imports exports. As I recall, and in my notes, there were missing data. Halna (Pro) did not miss anything. Can try both as they both have free ad based apps too.

Android Outliner is a single pane outliner (Halna is 2-pane) so that may explain the data issue.

Yes IIRC it imported the inline data but flattened it, which defeats the purpose of normal hjt dual pane use. Also some inline data went missing in big files on export into apps.

For a good single pane Win oultiner, Notecase Pro has "change view mode" from dual to single, app on android too.

FYI, NoteCase Pro is one of the programs I import hjt into.

Before a few months ago, the newest version wasn't importing Treepad files correctly. I wrote to the developer and he fixed it right away. I'm really impressed with the developer and the support from the forum.

So if you tried NCP to import hjt before a few months ago and it didn't import the information correctly, you may try it again. It works perfectly now. Just make sure you upgrade it.

Although, I don't think it exports in Treepad format, but there may be a script for it.

I am not sure if anyone still needs this, but all TreePad trials and the Lite versions are now available on the site of MyInfo for download:
