I’ve been looking (for years now it seems) for an outliner style personal database with a user interface that doesn’t get in the way too much but still has enough formatting and flexibility to be useful.

I must admit that both Ultra Recall and SQLNotes just confuse me, and I can’t be bothered to spend the time required to understand, let alone master these complex programs.

I turned up LexiCan (http://www.lexican.net) through a Google search. On first use, it seems to me to hit the sweet spot between a simple and visually pleasing interface, and enough functionality to make it useful for storing structured information.

Anybody else had a look at this one? Its kind of a desktop wiki (although more in terms of the manner of presentation rather than any major emphasis on internal linking.

I took a quick look.  I much prefer a 2-window outliner for info storage.  I use the metaphor of a book.  The left window is a list of chapters and sub-chapters. For each of these, the right window contains the text, graphics, etc.  The search function is the index.  There are 100s, perhaps 1000s of these available, many quite simple to use.  I’ve been using Jot Plus (http://www.kingstairs.com) for years.  (It’s main drawback for me is that I have to paste graphics separately from the text.)  Lexican seems to have more capabilities than Jot Plus.

I contacted the vendor and asked about the outlining feature.  It sent a screen shot that shows a view of the program as a 2-pane (window) outliner.

Andrew, have you considered MyInfo? Elegant interface, and some say less scary than Ultra Recall.

I would second this suggestion for those who find UR a bit too complicated (and I’m one of those). I use the portable version of MyInfo frequently. You can keep it simple or make use of its power features.
