Hello, all.

Wow. It has been pretty quiet here the past few weeks. No much going on in the world of outliners, I guess. I just noticed that next Wednesday (July 23), Topicscape Pro will be on sale at Bits du Jour for $49.95. I know that application has been discussed here and some of you may be interested in this news.

Hope everyone (in the Northern Hemisphere) is having a good summer.

Chuck Frey in his Mind Mapping blog has posted a link to an interesting overall introduction to Topic Scape.

also, Chuck Frey has a link to a software review:

I have sent off an e-mail to the support line asking if if the program well except software generated URLs—the kind that OneNote or UltraRecall will generate.

I will post the outcome of my question. If it is positive, I just might bite at the Bits Du Jour offer.

Cheers, and, incidentally, it’s very hot in my part of the Northern Hemisphere (“inside the Beltway”).

IMHO, calling this program 3D is a gimmick. It doesn’t allow any other structure than what is available in 2D plane, maybe they could call it raised 2D at most. In fact this 3D obscures more than it helps, just have a look at their screenshots

For all items, there is a limited number of children it can display in this “3D”, because items on the same level are aligned in lines and rows, so if one of them has more children, they will not be visible. Try it for yourself. And more problems occur when you try to link items from different parents, becomes real mess. It simple cannot display the growing structure, bad concept from the very beginning.

I grew up in Southern Arizona and I’ve always thought the view of the mountains is beautiful.

Not so with Topicscape.  Unless something important is missing from the provided screen shots on its Web site, quant is absolutely correct.  The 3-D adds nothing.  Personal Brain probably would be a better choice, but much more expensive.  Another alternative is Inspiration 8.  One can draw Web diagrams in it and then switch to the outline view to add notes, pictures, etc.  Also, like Brain, one can center the view on any node of a web [right click on the node and select Web…].  One can also zoom out or in using the mountain(!!!) symbols in the bottom left corner.  Note:  Inspiration is usually updated every 2 years.  Next due date is Dec. 2008.
