Announcement in its forum from TheBrain staff:

“Things are going so well that we decided to make TheBrain 9 Beta the download of choice for all users.”

and on their download page

“Don’t want the beta? We don’t recommend it, but you can still get TheBrain 8.”

I’ve used the beta since its first release late last yea.  It has steadily evolved and is very stable, in my opinion.  The iOS beta is still in early days.

The last Webinar they had, the presenter used version 9 for the first time, so I knew they were getting close with it.

The one thing version 9 is missing that I find so useful in version 8 is the ability to drag an email right from Outlook onto the plex and have it become a thought. With 9 you have to drag the email message to your desktop first, then drag it into the plex. And then it doesn’t become a link back to the original, but a copy (sometimes that’s better, but not always). Other than that, though, version 9 is pretty impressive.

What do you guys use TheBrain for?
How does it fare with Tinderbox and Devonthink?

I am not asking about the features. I just want to hear actual usage context where and why you could prefer it over TB.

Several years ago I wrote a comparison of TheBrain (known then as PersonalBrain) and Tinderbox at my blog:

https://welcometosherwood.wordpress.com/2010/06/08/tinderbox-vs-personalbrain-grudge-match-or-play-nice/

Both apps have undergone advancements since then, but I think the main comparisons hold.

I also wrote a post about how I use TheBrain as a management tool:

As far as TheBrain vs. Devonthink, I wouldn’t use TheBrain as the stash for lots of information—though you could.

I have several of AppleScripts of my own making to get info back and forth from/to Tinderbox and/or DEVONthink.  Unfortunately TheBrain 9 broke everything.  I’ve waited for a stable release to fix things.

I use TheBrain (v8 and now v9) as a massive collector of stuff—notes, links, attachments, web pages, etc.  I put stuff into it from DEVONthink databases—usually I don’t take thoughts out of TheBrain and put them into DEVONthink though.  For example, if I am doing research and have collected a lot of annotation notes in DEVONthink, I might import those into TheBrain.

With Tinderbox it is usually the other direction.  I take “thoughts” (i.e., notes) out of TheBrain and add them to project-related Tinderbox documents.  It is very easy to search in TheBrain, make a selection, and copy or export the selection as names + text, then move them into Tinderbox.

So, to summarize.  TheBrain is a massive long-term data collection point.  DEVONthink is a source for notes in TheBrain.  Tinderbox is a destination when I want to use a narrow selection of notes from TheBrain.  (The latter is also the case when I move notes from DEVONthink into Tinderbox—I never move data from Tinderbox to DEVONthink or to TheBrain.)
