The release notes for Scrivener for windows Version 1.9, released on October 6, lead off with the following: “Scrivener’s file format has been updated for compatibility with future mobile versions.”  No other information provided, but one can only hope.

If you go the Literature & Latte forums and Keith Blount’s blog, you’ll find more (much, much more) about this. As I understand the reasons for the delay, L&L has been struck by the sort of personnel problem that a larger team would have easily ridden out; in addition, the tasks of creating something like the full breadth of Scrivener’s functionality on iOS and enabling sync-ing of Scrivener’s multi-file format between iOS and Windows and OS X have both proved very challenging indeed. But as you say, the evidence is that the end of all this effort is at last in sight.

However, as I implied in another thread: I value Scrivener for what it is, not what I hope it might become. But because I’ve liked the goals and approach of the L&L team since Scrivener was first launched eight or so years ago, I’ve been very sorry to see all the travails Keith and co have faced over their iOS project.

It must be unbelievably frustrating for Keith, actually, because screenshots show that they’ve had early betas of the iPhone version running for nearly two years.

But it’s a heavyweight product, and it doesn’t sound as if Keith is prepared to compromise much on the mobile version - good for him!

And besides, he’s such a very nice bloke, as I discovered many years ago when contacting him about the Windows version. Patience will pay off, I’m quite sure.

Having said that, in a recent blog entry, I was encouraged to find a brief mention of Soulmen’s intention of bringing Ulysses to the iPhone.

Now that would be very cool!

Interesting discussion here with Keith Blount, a few weeks back.  Hints that Scrivener iOS is almost feature complete—and improvements in Scrivener 3 for desktop.  Not surprisingly, sync is the major hurdle for Scrivener iOS—talk here about moving from one device to the other to work on the same writing project.
