Those of you who have tried UltraRecall in the past may remember that it would not work in Windows versions released after the UltraRecall version.  So, to continue using UltraRecall in your updated OS, you’d also have to purchase an updated version of UltraRecall.  Needless to say this was very aggravating.

I was curious to see if I could get UltraRecall working in Windows 8.1 somehow.  I tried running UR 4.2a in various compatibility modes - Vista, XP - no luck.  Went to the Kinook forum and verified that running in “compability mode” doesn’t work.  However I did see an idea to try running UR in a VirtualBox virutal pc running an earlier version of Windows.

So I set up a Virtual PC and installed Windows XP 32 in that virtual PC.  In this Windows XP virtual machine I installed UR 4.2a.  (It took me a while to figure out how to move the setup file and my UR database from the “host” machine to the “guest” machine but I finally got that working.)

Voila.  UR 4.2a is running and working in my Windows XP virtual machine.

Not sure how usable it will be since I’m running UR 4.2a in a guest machine while I run the rest of my stuff in the Windows 8.1 host machine.
