Hello,

Can anyone confirm whether askSam has finally bitten the dust?

Are you prompted to ask this because their web site has been down? There was a small amount of chatter on the AskSam list serve about that. However, this has happened before and then Wade Goodman, who seems the last one standing at the company, comes on a few days later to say they were just having a problem with their server… Right now I’m betting that’s what will happen, but who knows?

Hello Steve,

You may be right, but it does appear more final this time. Such a pity as, properly developed, it could have been a world-beater. I’ve been using it since the DOS days and have never had any real problems, although I know others have complained loudly of long-standing bugs which were never addressed. I signed up for the Version 8 Beta a long time ago, but the beta continually expired before a new update was released, and I haven’t heard of any progress on this version for some considerable time.

Regards, Geoffrey

The last time this happened was in early July. When people inquired on the list serve, this is the response from Wade Goodman:

We have not closed up shop. We’ve had a fairly major server crash but as soon as we recover we’ll release askSam 8 and share with you some future plans for askSam.
Thanks,
Wade

This happened in March, too, and the result seemed to be that they were continuing development of askSam 8—however, there has been no response yet this time around. I don’t know if Wade was whistling past the graveyard in July, lying through his teeth (or in this case, fingers on the keyboard), or if things have changed and this time it is for real. Or maybe it was the truth and he’ll get things right again soon. We’ll have to wait and see.

I always liked the IDEA of askSam, but the execution in the form of the software left a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Lots of unmet potential.

Right on schedule: This came through the list serve from Wade Goodman:

We have experienced a massive server crash here at askSam and everything we have is currently down. We are currently working with a development team to get switched to a new server and running again as quickly as possible—but it’s proving to be quite a prolonged ordeal for us. askSam is still being developed and supported but currently all of our resources are tied up in the rebuild. We are planning an AS8 release as soon as we can get back on our feet. We are also discussing some exciting things for the future of askSam – I will do my best to keep you posted here.

I don’t know of any software company that has had more trouble with their servers. This is the third time this year. Makes you wonder!
