I am a lurker for the last few months, and a long time PIM addict going back to KAMAS on my Kaypro 10, even bought a ramdisk to spped it up. Have never found anything I liked better than Magellan and Agenda working together, but by the time I had them tweaked to my liking they were obsolete,

I recently downloaded UltraRecall Pro, and it looks like it will be a keeper for me, if just for the easy capturing of data. My outiner is Notepad, sometmes treepad light. I am one of many who has never been able to crack ZOOT, but I admire the Admiral, and wish I could find a leg up on it.

I have played around with the Brain, and think it is beautiful, but never found a use for it. The online thesaurus I was pointed to from her looks scrumptious, but pricey, and is on my wish list.

If you like TreePad, you should definitely check out KeyNote. Although it is no longer actively supported, it is mature and stable. I’ve tried dozens of different tools, but keep going back to KeyNote. It looks a little stale at first, but I was able to spruce it up with a set of new icons and font tweaks… it is now visually appealing and helps me graphically locate key entries.

Me, too!

KAMAS on a souped-up Kaypro, that is… in my case, a Kaypro II, with added 512 kb ramdisk.

Those were the days…

I’m a former KAMAS user, too. These days, Freemind is definitely part of my tool chest. I’m in the Linux world, not Windows, but have admired Freemind as truly cross-platform.

The current best-of-class in Linux is Notecase Pro (http://www.virtual-sky.com/index.php)—a two pane outliner with word count, spell check, and the ability to input and output to a variety of file formats.

On occasion, I still miss a single pane outliner, and the pickings are slim in Linux. The best I’ve found there is Tkoutline (http://tkoutline.sourceforge.net/wiki/).

But as so many postings prove here, the best tool really depends on what you’re looking for it to do. For me, outlining always been a writing tool. And for that, Freemind is a fantastic broad planning tool—not quite so convenient as a producer of text.
