... at Bits du Jour today (is it redundant to write “du jour today”?).

This is a great deal on a fantastic application. I’ve been using Cintanotes for a long time now and can’t say enough good things about it. It’s incredibly useful and one of the most ergonomic programs I’ve ever tried.

An interesting case study about the power of ergonomics is a comparison of CintaNotes with Personal Knowbase. PK has been around a long time—at least ten years, but probably several years longer. Its organization paradigm is essentially the same as CN, using keywords (basically the exact same as tags) to categorize notes. In fact, they are one of the first info managers that I’m aware of to use tags. PK is actually the more powerful application, with a richer editor that more closely equals a full-fledged word processor. There is a lot to like about PK. I’ve long admired it. I’ve rarely ever used it, because it is an ergonomic mess (in my opinion). For example, the hot-keys for creating a new article are CTR-1. To close an article you’d think CTR-2, but you’d be wrong. It’s CTR-W. The interface is not particularly user friendly. The application has to be the active application to add a note. After all this time, they still haven’t given PK the ability to live in the system tray. To sum it up, everything that makes CintaNote a dream to use is absent from PK.

Bitsmith had the chance to make Personal Knowbase the leader in this field, but they resisted any efforts to improve the interface and user experience. Now they are being crushed by a $5 application.

I’ve wondered whether there’s an advantage fr having both CintaNotes and Evernote.

Daly,

I have both, but I don’t need both (heck, I don’t really need either). If you’re happy with Evernote, then no need for CintaNotes. I use Evernote when I know I want to share the information between my computers. I’m still experimenting with CintaNote to see if it really fills any kind of niche—if it does, it will just be for quick jottings to myself for filing elsewhere when I have the chance.
