Drop.io bought by Facebook and closing on Dec. 15

I do not know if anybody here uses Drop.io for file sharing, but they just announced that they will be closing down on Dec. 15. It a shame that Facebook decided not to keep them up and running, as I was just starting to use their service for file sharing. I will continue to use DropBox and Box.net, but this is, again, a good reminder that any service provider can close up shop with limited notice.

"After Dec. 15, paid accounts will be discontinued as well."

I had a paid account and I find this outrageous. Fortunately it was for a project ending on December 31 and I no longer relied on the service.

It's one thing to discontinue free services and another to ignore financial agreements.

Alexander,

Sorry to hear about your paid account. My reason for posting was so people with data in their site could take appropriate action to protect their information from loss.

As I said, by coincidence, it's not a big deal for me. But I find it very disturbing that companies can so easily walk out from their obligations to paying customers. Even more disturbing is the casual tone of the announcement, without even a hint of an apology http://drop.io/future.htm

With such behaviour, it is not surprising that many people remain cautious on the cloud. I have personally opted to use the cloud for backup and sync, while maintaining local copies of my data, and I am grateful for this.

I agree. That is why I like programs that easily allow me to keep copies of my data locally, and in a common format.
