Okay, after a lengthy public beta, Notebooks 2.0 by Alfons Schmid is available on the Mac App Store or directly from his website (14-day trial version also available).

It’s a great app, but they still haven’t solved the “PDF problem”, that is, the inability to search inside a PDF (full-text searches will find the PDF, but you can’t then search inside the found PDFs for the text you want - for that, you have to re-open the PDFs in Finder). It’s a shame, but I know Alfons is working on it.

Meanwhile, Notebooks 2.0 has plenty to offer despite this shortcoming - notably multiple windows, fast operation and some lovely formatting abilities (RTF, Markdown, MultiMarkdown) plus lots of export options. And a bunch of new styles.

As a powerful information store, there’s not much that compares. I believe Alfons is working on a Windows version that should be comparable to the new Mac version.

Cheers,
Bill
