$49? I got Ouitline 4D for $39, but that was a few years ago. Often devs come through their work. Some are good, some bad, some mixed, occasionally some angels and some wreak of evil however much lipstick on the pig or perfumed words. But most are just ordinary guys and girls that make software that you enjoy.

Does it matter? Isn’t it like filling up your car’s tank? No. Apart from updates, service, ongoing dev, communication etc., their spirit comes across in the UI design, functionalities etc., atleast for me. YMMV. It is not like filling your car for me, the character comes through. Good or twisted or mix of, using it, the dev gets under the skin.

Thirdly they cost a fortune. Why? Because as I read about someone here recently spending numerous hours on an app with no or little joy, usual gig here, I remembered lessons I learned from testing hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of apps. And why I got to be fast doing it. Because even if you are illiterate, not highly educated as some of us, you should multiply those numerous wasted hours on a twisted app by the minimum wage (if not your professional normal hourly rate) and you see the minimum that guy just cost you. A small fortune with big vampire apps! Fourthly it costs your life, like losing hours to cigarettes or quality time you could have spent with loved ones or on a hobby or leisure or R&R etc. All the above is the cost of a genuine gift, or a Trojan horse.

So calculate how much each app is costing you, really!

That’s how I learnt to assess apps, how much time+learning curve+usage vs benefits. Is it an heavenly angel or a psychic vampire? i can smell them now after a few minutes. Outline 4D is an old app with an outdated libkit look and i can only laugh at people who tried the check for update option in the help menu anytime this decade. But it is unique in what it does and how it outlines in many ways and that is why it sells. I still use it sometimes. Lastly, the good spirit of the dev shines through. Unlike much Dracula bloatware, this is a goodie, for me uses at least. I hope he is well and long may he run.

Here is an oultiner app which is not a psychic vampire either:
