If you aren’t paying for a product, you *are* the product.

It is quite staggering how you can target groups of people using demographics and retargeting (cyberstalking). For example, if you are selling a wedding product you can specify that you want to show your ad to college educated American females, who are college education. in a certain age range, who are engaged. You can then use a retargeting cookie to show your ads to them wherever they go. And its all automated. Its not particularly sinister IMHO - they just want to sell you stuff. But I don’t like where it is all heading. Ever more ads and intrusion into our privacy to pay for all the free software we take for granted.
