Doc,

You might take a look at TheBrain. You can get a concept map approach using the expanded view mode, which allows you to move your “thoughts” around at will. Then you can use the somewhat obtuse, but effective selection process to export a plain text file that maintains the hierarchy via tabbed indents.

I believe you can do this with the free version, so you don’t need to make a big investment.

Anyway, just another option to consider.
