askSam for Windows is, to me, the best text-based database in history. I think that there is a trial version on their web site at http://www.asksam.com It can be used with forms, but its greatest use is as a freeform database that can be searched by words or phrases. There is also a DOS version, but I’m not sure it is available anymore.
Nota Bene for Windows (and the one for DOS) is a killer writing application that is designed for academics. My only complaint about the windows version is that it does not come with a manual; you have to wade through help screens, and some of the features are very complex. And it is EXPENSIVE. You had best be very serious about writing to consider it. Like askSam, you can index large text files for searching.
Of the two, askSam is closer to what you are requesting.
On the very cheap side, Parsons Software has a Daily Journal for about $30 that will serve as a computerized diary. If you don’t need big power, this might serve you best.
