I then opened a smaller doc file, 24 pages, about 80 end notes. It translated it quickly and correctly. I saved it as an rtf. It did so just as quickly as word, and it opened it not quite as quickly as Word, but fast. Word took 2 seconds, Abiword took 3.

I like to work on chapters or chunks of no more than 20 to 30 pages. But in the final stages you have to be able to look at the whole thing. Word lets you do that (and is quite snappy nowadays). AbiWord can’t handle it. Perhaps it is better with large files in its own format, but I am not going to try now.

If this seems chopped up, it is because I did chop it up (I cannot post more than about two paragraphs without the message being rejected.)
