Graham,

I have used AbiWord mostly for papers (less than 30 pages) and other shorter documents with footnotes, and it performed well for me. I don’t think I ever tried to import a word document into it. But I did save files in rtf and then opened them in Word without problems. (As you know, Word is used by most everyone and you just have to have it to exchange documents.)

I guess AbiWord is O.K. for light work, but it isn’t ready for prime time.
