If you are comfortable with its logic, I think Brainstorm is what you want. For organizing heterogeneous material without concern for formatting or long-term storage, it is unsurpassed, probably on any platform.

To me, the really big drawback to Word’s outliner is its lack of mark and gather functionality. After all, you can turn off formatting in Word’s outliner. One good thing about BrainStorm, though, is that you don’t lose the really strong functions and architecture of Word: multiple documents; multiple windows; and to me most importantly, splitting a window. These are usually absent in the competitors, and I can’t think of another that lets you split windows. (Maybe Inspiration does—don’t recall.)
