Probably the single most significant change we could make in promoting an outliner like NoteMap is to stop calling it an outliner. People, at least the ones I grew up with (and I was one of them), learn to hate the concept of outlining because it seems like a waste of time and a drudge.
The name “NoteMap” isn’t much better, at least not for a general market, because it doesn’t really describe the product… though it works well as part of the line of “Map” products from CaseSoft. Something like IdeaBuilder or SmartWriter or PowerProse would be better. The point isn’t to create outlines, but to structure your thinking and writing, to make the journey from concept to well-thought-out and persuasive prose. That’s the benefit of using a program like NoteMap.
