This topic appears once in a while.  Having just encountered the problem…again, perhaps some interchange is worthwhile.  From my own experience, I note the following:

1.  Among the criteria for selecting a PIM should be

>>> a.  What is the likelihood of its longevity?  InfoSelect and TreePad appear to be good candidates.  Any others?

>>> b.  Can it export to a “standard” format?

>>> c.  If a new version of the PIM has a new file format, can it open files in the older format?  Can it open files in formats 2 or 3 versions ago?

2.  With respect to 1.b. and 1.c., it is important to test to make sure these (1.b. & 1.c.) work whenever there is any format or operating system change.
