For mobile situations, here’s what I do:

I have a pocket planner/diary with a leather cover.  The cover is actually a checkbook cover.  Each year I insert a new planner into the cover.  The advantage of this is that the cover provides two pockets into which I can slip notes, etc. and, more importantly, I can insert pages with information that I wish to keep from year-to-year.  I don’t have to re-enter this info as I would have to do with a new planner that has covers but no pocket.  (If I can’t find a refill for my cover, I buy a new planner with a cover and remove most of the cover, turning it into an insert for my leather cover.)  I use the planner as both a calendar and as a place to jot notes.  As I always have it with me, I don’t lose notes that I would otherwise write on scraps of paper and then promptly mislay.
