Okay, I’ve tried twice to post the findings of my research on why Tom Davis is called The Admiral. I found a message from James Fallows from 2002 on the Zoot Yahoo forum that told the story. I thought I’d just copy his story so you could read it in his words, but this forum keeps deleting those, so I’ll just paraphrase.

Back in 1996, there was a discussion on a Compuserve bulletin board about how Zoot [known as InfoSnatch at the time] compared with Agenda.  James Fallows listed Zoot’s virtues and refered to Tom as Mr. Zoot (even as InfoSnatch, the program had a feature called the Zooter, which is a tool for collecting information, a tool it still has). Upon reading James’s comments, Tom responded, thanking James for the nice words and then (tongue in cheek, I assume) he added that he appreciated being refered to as Mr. Zoot, but he prefered Captain Zoot, or when he was taking a bath, Admiral Zoot. The rest is history.

I’ll be hoping this response doesn’t go the way of my other two, off into cyberspace never to be heard from again.

Steve Z.
