Alx said, “At this time in the development of hardware and software technology, I expect commercial software to be able to handle mission critical information reliably. Even most open source software can do it from versions 1.0 onwards.”

If only this were true.  Anyone who uses Microsoft software extensively knows that this is not true.  The emailing of MS Word or Excel files can be especially exasperating.  I have had WORD files arrive with changed fonts and formatting and Excel files arrive with changed or gibberish data.  I don’t really know if the mailing program or its attachment compression software were at fault, or whether different settings in the destination MS software caused the problems.

I have been heard to say that desktop computing is still in its childhood and we should expect that it won’t always act properly.
