As Charlie (I think) explained sometime ago, the sheer choice of available ready-made controls in Windows, i.e. Tree, RTF Edit, Find/Replace, has lead to most “contemporary” programs offering very similar features.

The exceptions, whether commercially successful or not, seem to be precisely the programs that were conceived in the DOS days, when nothing was taken for granted, including features, navigation controls, GUI layout or whatever. The shining example for this is of course Brainstorm, but I have a feeling that Zoot has similar roots, perhaps inspired by Lotus Agenda or Notes.
