Not sure what you mean, at the time of entry you can leave the subject as general and ignore the keyword entry.
You can subsequently do a search for of all cards based on content using the “Note Contains” search option.
I agree with you about categorisation at moment of input, and is indeed the opposite of how I work as well.
Not at all sure why you think this might appeal to Academics ?
