There is a step from outline to narrative, I think. For me, that last coat of polish on a work of writing is joining—taking an overelaborated point (determined mostly on the basis of proportion—size of paragraph) and combining things.

We’re conditioned by powerpoint to make everything a bullet. But many things are subtler, and fit more smoothly into related text than divided text.
