I find it easier to drag an item to another to make it a child than to drag the end of a connector in Inspiration or to use the Link tool.

Dragging the node to another node also allows the equivalent of mark and gather. I don’t think you can link several items at the same time in Inspiration, but I haven’t checked to be sure yet.
