[Charlie: What do you think of the idea of the data pane of a multipane outliner being impelemented as a browser object, so that you can open a web page, a Word doc, an Excel spreadsheet—- or an outline, assuming you had an outliner app which was also an OLE/COM server?]

The idea sounds great and, frankly, I can’t understand why it hasn’t been implemented yet, with the mentioned exception of InfoRapid, which I wasn’t familiar with. I thought that’s what OLE is all about.

Many two-pane outliners can save “objects” in their branches and then open then in their corresponding applications, but not within their own editor pane which can only handle RTF and/or HTML.

UltraRecall has gone one step further, as its editor pane can render HTML, edit RTF and access the database templates. However, in order to show other saved objects it displays a “click here” link in the pane and opens it with its associated application.
