I don’t know if this is the cause of your problem or not, but there’s a problem with the ATI RAGE Video drivers on the G3 that can cause some cosmetic redraw problems in older software.

It’s described in the Tech Info Library at http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n58282 along with a fix.
