Stephen, I suspect ADM uses a combination of approaches. However, seems to me that a lot of the metadata developments, which are advanced compared to other software, including MyInfo and Ultra Recall,are probably the result of extensive hands-on, in-house coding. The recently annouced addition of many new word-processing features to textcards may, as you suggested a few posts back, be off-the-shelf stuff, as it probably is in most new programs. I think that the ADM developers deserve credit for not letting their work be defined by the off-the-shelf software development products that are out there.
