I change the structure as part of the writing process, but fact that writing in an outliner makes this easier hasn’t induced me to write in an outliner environment. (It may be that the primary difference between us is that I don’t hate MS Word’s outliner, and find it sufficient for latter-stage reorganizing.) The reason I don’t want to write in an outliner is what I’ve found it does to transitions. For me it produces choppy writing. I sounds like you introduce transitions later on, which may be a key difference in how we approach writing.

I have never tried doing a lot of work on transitions at the end. I think I can compose a transition a lot faster in the heat of experiencing the connection between the ideas.
