I agree with your assessment Stephen. Indeed Iíd go a bit further.
The likelihood of a program being developed that meets both our creative and database needs is low. If it did happen it probably would be a bloated whale anyway.
Iíve noticed that my focus of late is increasingly on interoperability among applications. For a practical example:
Recently I had to make a presentation at which the participants received hard copy documentation. I started my planning by doing a simple outline of the issues in ProjectKickstart. I used PKS because it has quite powerful ìhotlinksî to a variety of programs. After doing the outline I sent it to MindManager but it was much too messy for a presentation. I then sent the same outline to WBS ChartPro, liked what I saw, refined it inside WBS and printed.
I then needed to do another more sophisticated outline for a different aspect of the presentation and this time used NoteMap. After finishing the outline I sent it to PowerPoint, chose a colour scheme and printed. Iíll store all the various files inside Idea!
The ability to be able to move between different apps as seamlessly as possible seems IMHO much more useful than searching for the ultimate one-stop solution.
I donít bother even looking at new PIM or project management apps these days if they donít have a good import/export routine that links the app with other quality products already in the marketplace. Iíve had too many orphans over the years!
