I think they were constraints, rather than positive choices. When Zoot was first developed there wasn’t as much choice of indexed search engines as there is now. The code is apparently still 16-bit and the developer has just started a complete re-write in 32-bit. At this point, features like an rtf editors and many other good things are promised. I don’t find the lack of indexed search too much of a drawback because my databases rarely get above 20 Mb.
