I made use of the column trick, though in a more rustic way (I don’t think that PC Outline had the option of working in columns). I would print out an outline so that it filled up half the page in a column down the left side. That left the right half empty for jotting down ideas, free association, pulling in new info, etc. Writing has always been a painful process for me. The column printout allowed me to have both structure and free form at the same time.
