Not only columns, but the equivalent of a TABLE “style” for the outline view would be extremely useful.

How would you envision columns working? Would individual subheads of a heading become individual columns?

I could see presenting a suboutline as a table either way: normal, where first level heads are rows, and their subheads are cells; or rotated, where first level heads are columns, and their subs are cells.
