Two alternatives to IS for outlining, but first a disclaimer: I have no financial or other vested interest in any of the products that are mentioned in this post. I base my comments on actual use of each of the products mentioned.

When ADM 3 comes out in the next couple of weeks try it. ADM is a true outliner, ie. a note can be subordinate to another note. ADM 3 will also feature key words and metadata columns, both of which will give you additional ways to access your information. ADM also will do a very fast search for any word in a document.

I think that key words and metadata columns together offer potential for some creative and effective ways to organize, access, and view data. I have worked with ADM 3 in the beta version, and with each refinement of the new features, have become more impressed with a) the quality of the software being developed, and (b) the responsiveness of the developer.

Ariadne is a neat little program you might wish to look at it. Ariadne, like IS, does not allow a note to be subordinate to another note. In other words, you need a new folder (Ariadne’s equivalent to a topic in IS). But the big difference with Ariadne is that any item in the outline can have a comment attached to it that shows up to the left of the item as an icon—click on the comment icon and you see its contents. So rather than use notes, you could use all folders, and put the note portion in a comment. Instead of clicking on a note title to see the note, you’d click on the comment icon adjacent to the folder.

Ariadne, unlike IS, allows for key words.

Also, if you are doing any of your research on the net, both ADM and Ariadne offer far superior capture of net data than IS—both faster and simpler.

Ariadne’s developer is also responsive to users.
